William Riddle's Store and Factory at Yorketown, South Australia.

William James RIDDLE was born in Battle, Sussex, England in 1854 and emigrated to South Australia on the ship "NIMROD" with his parents George & Catherine and older brother George Henry RIDDLE (born 1847) on 31st December 1855. As a teenager William was apprenticed to the firm of CULYER General Blacksmiths & Wheelwrights in Darlington, South Australia. In 1877 William became manager of the ironmongery business of PADMAN & CO at Yorketown, South Australia. He purchased the business three years later in 1880. His windmills were sold throughout South Australia and into Western Australia. As can be seen from the above photo he also operated the businesses of printer, ironmonger, timber merchant, carpenter & undertaker, blacksmith & wheelwright from the same premises. The separate building on the end was a chaff store, also owned by William RIDDLE. William Riddle died on 31 October 1915 in Yorketown, South Australia. The building was eventually demolished circa 1971.
